In the past month my camera has developed a purple horizon as you can see in this picture of Chung Hsing University students practicing jumping rope for Sports Day. I suppose it's the sensor reaching the end of its natural life. I've had my trusty Canon IXUS since Feb. 2004, almost four years, and it has served me very well. I'm assuming it's a problem with the sensor chip thingy. Any idea what it would cost to fix? I'm almost afraid to ask at a camera shop! Part of me is pleased that it seems to be on its last legs because now I'll be "forced" to buy a new one, perhaps a prosumer ultrazoom like the
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 or the
Canon PowerShot S5 IS . Might treat myself to one this Christmas....

unfortunately it's not worth the money to replace the CCD unless the camera is less than a year old - and then it should be covered under warranty. :(
I bet even if the real cost of replacing the CCD was reasonable the camera companies don't want to encourage people to replace worn out parts. Of course they want you to buy a whole new camera! Secretly I am glad that I now have an excuse to buy a new camera. They just keep getting better and better. Might wait till the new year to take the plunge. I'm leaning towards the Canon Powershot S5 at the moment. Looks like the best all-round prosumer with good video.
